Abstract

An approach to utilize electro-optically (EO) active polymers in hybrid waveguide structures was discussed. A guided mode was made to undergo adiabatic transitions from sol-gel waveguide up into the EO polymer and back by selectively exposing the core of a buried channel guide, overcoating with an EO polymer, and using appropriately tapered transition zones. The demonstration of the EO modulation verified that the approach required smooth vertical transitions of intensity between sol-gel waveguides and the EO polymer overlayer to obtain efficient EO modulation.
