Abstract

Emperor Maximilian became the target of satirical humor, especially in the form of itinerant puppet theater. One of the most critical plays was "The Pastry War," in which the famous puppet, ElNegrito, representing the Mexican people defeated the French. This play offers an opportunity for a thick description in the Geertz manner of the play as a window on popular attitudes that resulted in the formation of national identity. The play and the puppet demonstrate one of the popular sources that helped shaped the attitudes about the nation and its people.
