    Abstract

Brown-to-black pigment deposits present in association with sites of hemocytic activity in penaeid shrimp (Crustacea, Decapoda) were demonstrated to be melanin by use of histochemical techniques. The brown-black pigment was associated with cellular inflammatory disease processes of infectious and noninfectious etiologies in Penaeus californiensis, P. stylirostris, P. vannamei, and P. duorarum.
