Abstract

An optical computer for the reconstruction of computed tomography images is being constructed. The system is capable of reconstructing an image from its projection data in a video frame time (approx. 30 ms). The system implements the standard filtered back-projection algorithm using an acousto-optic (AO) convolver for the filtering step and an incoherent optical system for the back-projection operation. The key to the performance of the system lies with the convolver.
