Abstract
The concept of state of degradation is employed in order to consider the initial material (structure) inhomogeneity. Then, degradation and its patterning in simulated rock specimens subjected to external load are modeled numerically by implementing the theory for damage and surface degradation with incorporation of the initial state. The theoretical results are compared with experimental observations obtained through ultrasonic scanning tests.
