Abstract

Chronic liver disease and ALF disrupt normal homeostasis and cause systemic manifestations that may dominate the clinical features of liver disease. The pathophysiology of cirrhosis contributes to a cascade of changes throughout the body. The primary extrahepatic manifestations discussed are hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and portopulmonary hypertension, which can cause significant morbidity and mortality prior to LT. A variety of endocrine disorders may also occur. Most of these extrahepatic syndromes are reversible with LT.
