Abstract

The absolute radiometric calibration uncertainty requirement for several multispectral imaging sensors to be used in the Earth Observing System (EOS) program is ±2% (one sigma) with respect to the sun. The authors review some proposed in-flight absolute calibration methods that have this uncertainty as their goal. In particular, they describe two methods, and recent improvements to them, that concern reflectance- and radiance-based calibration using a carefully selected ground reference site. The magnitudes of the error sources are listed. A ratioing radiometer approach to monitoring the reflectance of a solar diffuser used for onboard calibration is discussed.
