Abstract
Circular-grating surface emitting distributed Bragg reflector lasers and unstable resonators surface emitting distributed reflector Bragg lasers are attractive candidates for high power, low divergence surface emission. Quantum wells and strained quantum wells are widely used as active structure. In order to simplify the fabrication process, it is desirable to use the same layer structure for both the active and passive grating section. The absorption in a passive quantum well can be significantly reduced by red shifting the lasing wavelength with respect to the gain peak, combined with absorption coefficient saturation at relatively low power. In this paper, the design and operation of the grating coupled surface emitting lasers with strained quantum wells for the active and the grating sections are described.
