Abstract
Fixity and fluidity is a mesolevel conceptual binary situated between, on the one hand, a handful of influential abstract oppositions that structure both social thought and methodology and, on the other, more concrete and substantive descriptions and categorizations of empirical phenomena (practices, objects, events, and meanings) and their associated causal processes. This middle position gives the binary considerable conceptual traction. What is more, the spatial imaginaries its terms invoke have made this conceptual dyad increasingly popular among geographers.
