Fluctuations in transverse energy and multiplicity in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are a valuable probe of the collision dynamics. Analysis of recent CERN and BNL data on fluctuations in central collisions provides evidence that the nuclear constituents scatter and produce particles coherently.
