Abstract
Geography's engagement with film can be traced to humanistic and Marxist critiques of the dominance of quantitative and regional geography in the 1960s through the 1980s. Approaches to film and debates around the usage of film in geographic research have changed over the year, but a useful heuristic that frames current research trends is the author-text-reader (ATR) model. With this model, film geography has emphasized two epistemologies: hermeneutics and critical analysis of film as text, and extra textual approaches loosely situated around film as part of the cultural economy and the geography of film's form. Film geography is an exciting subfield that combines social theory with film and media studies as well as political and economic geography.
