Abstract

In a volume designed to pay tribute to Peter Franken, it appears appropriate to make some comments on the second harmonic generation (SHG) and rectification of light, which were first demonstrated by him and his coworkers [1,2]. The topic of SHG by short pulses continues to receive much attention, especially in phase-matched and quasi-phase-matched conditions [3-6], because of significant applications.
