N2 - Sonar sensor is one of the most typical devices used for real-time local scour monitoring around piers of bridge structures. However, insufficient accuracy of the sonar sensing system in presence of sediment in water and flow turbulence limits the use for widespread adoption to bridge scour monitoring. Thus, these field conditions, peculiar to most monitoring sites and flood events, reduce the reliability of the monitoring system. The main focus of the work is to improve the measurement quality of low-cost sonar sensors in turbid water and turbulence flow conditions by identifying the measurement noise characteristics, caused by flow turbulence and pseudo echoes of sediment participle, providing appropriate signal processing strategies. Preliminary results of sonar sensing in laboratory setup are presented.
