Abstract

We report the first successful use of quantum well laser amplifiers in the transmission, at 1300 nm, of a 6.5 Gbit/s soliton signal over 250 km of standard single mode optical fibre with a repeater spacing of 50 km. The amplifiers exhibit a small signal, fibre to fibre, gain of 25 dB (saturation power: 15 dBm). Stable transmission performance is demonstrated and we relate these results to the theory of the propagation of guiding-centre solitons. We show that this system can be readily expanded to transmission over a thousand kilometres.
