Abstract

This chapter discusses ways that related processes of reading, writing, interpreting, creating, and collaborating are shaping literacies and learning on the internet. The piece begins with theoretical work that introduces an expanded view of new literacies. Next, the authors introduce characteristics inherent within the internet as a learning environment and the affordances, constraints, and implications of these characteristics. Finally, the piece examines how the internet has shifted our social values and the ways these changing values are reflected in curricula that adopt a global view. Finally, the authors identify under-realized potentials in the field and suggest avenues for future research.
