Abstract
We present exact solutions for an extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This model is applied to the propagation of femtosecond pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. Solutions are found that indicate the possibility of bright and dark solitary waves in wavelength regimes that are not accessible to the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
