Abstract

The effects were studied of signal type (including coded binary numbers and the range of the information presented) on reaction time and correct signal detection. Fourteen subjects were exposed to four types of stimuli within four levels of difficulty (number of available choices). The four types of stimuli were colors, binary numbers, Arabic numbers, and sounds. The four levels of difficulty were simple reaction and two, four, and eight choices. The subject's task was to push the right control button as soon as a visual stimulus was displayed on a CRT or a sound stimulus was presented. The results indicated that mean reaction time to binary numbers, simple response, was significantly faster than that of colors. Arabic numbers, or sounds. Higher-orders-of-choice reaction time were faster and more reliable for visual stimuli than for auditory stimuli.
