Abstract

While our understanding of Oswald von Wolkenstein's poetic work in its historical-cultural context has grown considerably, we still do not know enough about the literary-historical context. Musicologist have already demonstrated how much Oswald was influenced by contemporary composers, so it is important for us to extend our comparative perspective and to study the content and meaning of his songs on a European level. The present paper introduces some of the most important contemporary French, English, Italian, and Spanish poets of his time, arguing that the first half of the fifteenth century witnessed a major development in the history of western European poetry in which Oswald participated in multiple fashion.
