Abstract

The American health-care system is undergoing a rapid socioeconomic revolution. Within a general environment of heightening competition, the number of investor-owned for-profi t hospitals has more than doubled in the past 10 years, while the number of independent proprietary for-profi t hospitals has declined by half.
