The paper by Poorter et al., contained publication errors which are corrected here. The 5th author name was incorrectly published as Brian Enquist instead of Brian J. Enquist. His affiliations should be Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona and the Santa Fe Institute, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
