Abstract

Analytical lower energy limits are established for optical interferometric modulation based on free-carrier plasma index change, then augmented with (1) optically-resonant modulation, or (2) resonantly (bound charge) mediated index change. When combined these suggest the possibility of single electron modulation, but saturation effects are significant.
