In a general higher-order beam theory, the displacements are presented as products of two sets of unknown functions, one of which is a function of the thickness coordinate only, and the other is a function of the axial (centerline) coordinate (i.e. separation of variables approach). With respect to the equivalent single-layer theories, the displacements are expanded in terms of various powers of the thickness coordinate z and unknow n functions Received 19 October, 1998; accepted 25 March 1999. I respectfully dedicate this paper to the memory of my beloved daughter, Amal. The author gratefully acknowledges the support by Professor J. N. Reddy of Texas University, College Station, USA.
