Abstract

We re-examine the subgap neutral and charged soliton absorptions in polyacetylene and the 21 Ag state in finite polyenes within the context of a simple Peierls-Hubbard model. Our motivation is to determine the origin of the optical gap in trans-polyacetylene and to determine the magnitude of the effective on-site Coulomb repulsion. We conclude that this term lies between 2.25t0 and 2.75t0, where t0 is the nearest neighbor one-electron hopping integral.
