Abstract

Electro-oculograms (EOG) obtained from 105 members of eight pedigrees of Best's macular dystrophy revealed that individuals with funduscopic abnormalities consistent with this diagnosis in every case had EOG light/dark ratios below 1.55, whereas those who were offspring of normal parents had ratios greater than 1.85. Among ophthalmoscopically normal offspring of affected parents, distribution of the EOG ratio was bimodal. Only three individuals in the latter group had values in the gray zone between 1.65 and 1.85. The EOG was a useful and reliable test for the diagnosis and genetic counseling of families with Best's macular disease.
