Abstract
After a brief review of the properties of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and of basic shell-model theory, the microscopic theory for determining effective interactions and operators for use in shell-model calculations is given. Difficulties in applying the usual formalism are discussed. Finally, a new large-basis, no-core shell-model approach is presented, which is able to handle these difficulties.
