Abstract

The time evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a periodic optical potential was investigated. The equation of motion for the envelop function modulating the Bloch states of the lattice potential was studied by using an effective mass formalism. It was shown that how that negative effective-mass affects the dynamics of the condensate.
