Abstract
Purpose: A video based digital eye tracking system has been developed and built into a head mounted device for stimulus presentation. The direction of gaze was recorded and analysed. Methods: A head mounted display (HMD) was equipped with an infrared video camera and infrared illumination. The proband's eye movements were recorded, digitized via a frame grabber and analysed. Probands fixated targets on the liquid crystal display with eccentricities of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 degrees in all directions. Adequate software was developed to calculate the directions of gaze. Results: The eye tracking system measures the direction of gaze with an accuracy below 1 degree and a reproducibility below 0.3 degrees. Conclusions: A video based eye tracking system combined with head mounted displays is a valuable tool for monitoring the fixation during stimulus presentation. Real time eye tracking will allow compensation of gaze deviations, thus improving the quality of visual tests such as automated perimetry without prolonged test duration.
