Abstract

The authors investigated the feasibility of coating polymers with hirudin to create new thromboresistant biomaterials. In the present study, various surfaces were coated with hirudin and subsequently examined for their effect(s) on the coagulation system and on platelet functions. Results obtained from this investigation suggest that hirudin can be immobilized onto the surface of various polymers for creating new thromboresistant biomaterials. For the maximum efficiency of hirudin-coated surfaces, it is necessary to select proper spacers and attachment sites on hirudin.
