Abstract

The development of a measure for identifying therapists' and counselors' intentions for their clients, the Counselor's Intentions List (CIL), is presented. Results of 3 investigations are discussed in terms of the CIL's validity and utility. The first study used video-assisted recall to analyze complete short-term treatments of 2 male and 2 female clients. The CIL was used to examine the relationship between the degree to which clients correctly understood their therapist's intention and session level therapy impact. Study 2 involved analyses of the responses of 276 psychologists to a survey investigating the impact of gender, area of practice, and theoretical orientation on psychologists' preferences for CIL items. Study 3 reported evidence pertaining to the inclusiveness of the 16 intentions specified on the CIL based on the ratings of 16 therapists and 16 untrained subjects rating of the contents of 126 items categorized as "other" in Study 1.
