Abstract

Water distribution systems contain a large number of pipes whose roughness factors are unknown prior to model calibration. During the calibration process, pipe roughnesses for each link cannot be determined without a tremendous cost. Therefore, the system is simplified by assuming sets of pipes have the same roughness coefficient (parameterization), by modeling a skeletal system after many pipes are dropped from the model (skeletonization) or a combination of these two alternatives. This paper presents an approach for examining the impact of model parameterization.
