Abstract
The essay traces the use of the learned borrowings "destinctiun" and its native synonyms "boc" and "dale", and "chapitres" and its native synonym "stuche" in MS. Cambridge Corpus Christi College 402 and the other extant manuscripts of AW. For both borrowings AW provides the first attestations in English. The essay discusses implications of the manuscript evidence for the phonological development of "destinctiun" in AW. It then looks at the occurrence of the borrowings and their Middle English synonyms, first, in the manuscripts included in the 2003-5 edition, next the other English manuscripts, and finally the French and Latin translations. The essay takes account of linguistic register and explores possible implications of the puzzling restriction of "destincciun" to just two occurrences in AW and "chapitres" to just one, and all to only the Preface.
