Abstract
Large two-photon absorptivities in bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives were observed to determine their two-photon absorption spectra and to examine structure/two-photon spectra relationships. A simple bis donor-substituted stilbene had exceptionally large two-photon absorption cross section. Two-photon excitation of a variety of bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives in the presence of acrylate monomers led to the formation of polymers. With the two-photon absorbing molecule dissolved at 1% concentration in triacrylate monomer, an excitation of approximately 600 nm with an intensity of approximately 100 MW/cm2 yielded cross-linked polymer spots.
