Abstract
A recent worldwide trend to improve productivity in manufacturing has centered around the adoption of computer controlled processing to provide the essential coordination of the manufacturing processes. This paper presents a decision making control hierarchy (DM/CH) for an automated manufacturing environment. The data requirements at each level in this hierarchy are identified in order to design a distributed database system. Various issues in the design of a distributed database system are outlined. The relevance of these issues with respect to an automated manufacturing environment is discussed. It is shown that there is a natural basis for partitioning data at various levels of the hierarchy.
