Abstract
Performance-based design concept in the construction industry was discussed. Performance-based design concept depends on many inter-connected issues including areas of applications, definition of performance, tool for measuring performance, quantitative indices that need to be satisfied, and performance under uncertainity. Load and resistance factor design (LRFD) concept is based on satisfying various limit state functions with predetermined risk or reliability levels. The performance of an existing structure can be established using information available at the time of design or using most recent information obtained from nondestructive health-assessment inspections.
