Abstract
Accurate, safe and reliable delivery of deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes to precise cortical and subcortical targets is the fundamental technical requirement for successful clinical and investigational neuromodulation. A variety of techniques are presently available for effective DBS electrode placement, including asleep, image-guided surgery in addition to traditional awake, physiologically guided surgery. This chapter will review the underlying principles of DBS and the range of stereotactic procedures available for electrode implantation.
