Abstract
An explanation for the appearance of stall cells based on lifting-line theory is offered and a simple formula for estimating the stall cell spacing is derived. As the angle of attack is increased beyond the stall angle a recirculation region forms near the trailing edge. The present analysis considers the entire flow region, both over the airfoil and the separated flow region. A model is developed for an infinite-span rectangular wing based on lifting-line theory.
