Abstract
The feasibility of performing self-filamentation of femtosecond pulses in air is investigated experimentally. A Ti:sapphire chirped pulse amplification laser system producing 150-fs, 15-mJ pulses at a 5 Hz repetition rate is used. Results reveal that filamentation in air occurs only for a sufficiently large negatively chirped pulse.
