title = "Computer assisted surgical training: Concepts, foundations, and modelbased techniques",
abstract = "Laparoscopic operation is a surgical technique that can significantly reduce pain, blood loss, and recovery time. However, with this procedure surgeons lose many of the tactile and visual cues that they rely upon in a conventional surgery. This summary of the plenary presentation provides an overview of the concept for computer-aided surgical training tools, discusses some of the existing systems, their advantages and shortcomings. A design concept for a surgical training and assessment system that provides unique sensing and reasoning capabilities for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is presented. A training device prototype has been developed. Preliminary results from a study conducted with novice and experienced subjects using the prototype are discussed. Future research work will focus on developing the technology as a surgical assistant system for use in the operating room (OR).",
