Abstract
The high spatial resolution of microarray image scanners results in relatively large image dimensions, easily exceeding 4000×13000 pixels in size in current commercial hardware. Due to the wide range of possible gene expression intensities, 16 bits to store each In in raw or tagged put of a single microarray experiment. The space requirements are multiplied when several experiments are performed as a part of a microarray study, as is usually the case. Therefore, the large amounts of data that are produced in laboratories around the world need to be efficiently stored and transmitted among computers in the same or in different centers. Data compression is the natural approach to this problem.
