Compression-induced failure of a glassy material with a crack-like defect

Pre-cracked specimens made of Araldite-B were compressed in the direction parallel to the plane of the crack until fracture occurred. The initial configuration of the cracks is slightly perturbed from the perfect line cracks. In all the experiments, compression splitting was observed. An analytical model was developed to predict crack growth and its interaction with free surfaces under compression loading by employing equations of elastic stability under plane stress conditions. The stress intensity factor for a through-width crack subjected to uniaxial compression was obtained by using mathematical techniques appropriate for mixed boundary value problems. This type of splitting test, along with accurate analytical predictions, may provide a reliable method for determining the fracture characteristics of brittle materials.
