Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HA) attached by a polysulfone carrier to strain gauges has been observed to bond to bone. In this study, the reproducibility of a coating process, the HA coating to gauge bond strength, and the rate of bone bond formation in vivo were assessed. Preliminary results indicate that the two coating have similar strengths, so that the major factor to consider is the bioactivity of the coatings as a function of crystallinity and particle size distribution. In addition, the ability to apply the HA produced by CeraMed more uniformly to the surface may allow more accurate strain sensing.
