Abstract

Optical nonlinearities of bulk GaAs and GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well samples are measured and compared over the wavelength region in the vicinity of bandgap at room temperature. The maximum index variation (Δ0n) is found to increase by a maximum of a factor of 3 as the well size is decreased from bulk to 76 A. The nonlinear absorption spectra are analyzed using a semi-empirical fit.
