Abstract

Hapke (1989, Icarus 79, 56-74) proposed that the surface of Io is dominantly basaltic with thin coatings of polysulfur oxide, S₂O, ad SO,₂. However, observations and models of the active volcanism indicate that volatiles such as sulfur and SO₂ must be more abundant than envisioned by Hapke.
