N2 - Hapke (1989, Icarus 79, 56-74) proposed that the surface of Io is dominantly basaltic with thin coatings of polysulfur oxide, S2O, ad SO,2. However, observations and models of the active volcanism indicate that volatiles such as sulfur and SO2 must be more abundant than envisioned by Hapke.
