Abstract
Some of our graduate students have been hugely amused by our participation in this volume. Since hearing of it, they have been fantasizing about us performing this paper in 1980s fashions, to the background sounds of ABBA and a slide show that displays-inlarger than life proportions-our 1980s permed hairdos. The imaginative pleasures of this spectacle no doubt play upon some troublinggendered stereotypes but we should also consider that clothes are objects that allow our memories to work in more specific and concrete ways. In this paper, we work with another aspect of this spectacle, this is, that our graduate students can imagine this scene in such detail precisely because so many clothing styles from the 1980s and earlier have come back into fashion.
