Abstract

The combined effect of two′s complement overflow and quantization in digital filters is investigated. It is shown that the filter dynamics can be quite different when the two nonlinear operations are operating together rather than individually. Both the state-space and direct-form structures are considered and sufficient conditions are established for stability under the combined effect of overflow and quantization. Some properties of limit cycles are also derived.
