College and career readiness for students of color: Using an antiracist ecological framework

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter provides an antiracist ecological approach to college and career readiness (CCR), as school counselors need to play an active role in speaking out against racism and ending racial inequity in the postsecondary preparation process. It includes a review of the literature pertaining to CCR, a detailed description of the role of school counselors in this CCR, and discussion of an antiracist ecological framework that can guide school counselors' CCR practices in the future. CCR involves the attainment of various skills that facilitate students' successful matriculation to postsecondary education or entry into the workforce. When considering current indicators of CCR along with enrollment trends, it is important to understand that we did not arrive here by happenstance. These enrollment statistics and indicators are a by-product of anti-Blackness that exists across every facet of U.S. institutions and structures.
