Abstract
Two distinct period doubling routes to chaos on the low transmission branch of a bistable ring cavity are identified with bifurcations from stable solutions in different regions of parameter space. New periodic cycles, which cannot be predicted by conventional linear stability analysis, can abruptly appear via a tangent bifurcation and undergo a period doubling cascade over a limited parameter range before disappearing.
