Abstract
Celia Thaxter drew authors, artists and musicians of the late 19th century to her hotel on Appledore Island in the Gulf of Maine during the summer months. She belongs to a tradition of women author-gardeners who found an outlet for their creativity by writing about their gardens. Her book An Island Garden (1894) has enabled the Shoals Marine Laboratory to restore in detail the formal layout and riot of color which existed in the early 1890s. -C.A.Middleton
