N2 - High-throughput assays have begun to revolutionize modern biology and medicine. The advent of cheap next-generation sequencing (NGS) has made it possible to interrogate cells and human populations as never before. Although this has allowed us to investigate the genetics, gene expression, and impacts of the microbiome, there remain both practical and conceptual challenges. These include data handling, storage, and statistical analysis, as well as an inherent problem of the analysis of heterogeneous cell populations.
